HTML: Hyper Text Markup Language
HTML stands for hyper text markup language. It is the basic system of displaying textual content and images on web pages. Any Website - no matter what kinds of other technologies are used will always use HTML. The markup language bit simply means that the textual content is marked up with other little chunks of code which are interpreted by the web browser.
Probablly the simplest examples of these "tags" are:
<b>, <i> and <u>
which respectively mean bold, italics, and underline
The HTML language has evolved over time and the latest incarnation is called XHTML. These web pages are written in XHTML Strict which is the most up to date version of the HTML language.
